Isabelle Sellick, broker support technician for the Lloyd’s and London market division at Clegg Gifford, talks about her firm’s entry to the Excellence in Professional Development category
1. Why did you put yourselves forward for this category?

Clegg Gifford (CG) is delivering a new generation for the insurance industry when the market is facing a genuine staffing shortage.
The fact that 10% of our workforce are apprentices is something I’m enormously proud to be a part of.
Apprentices at CG reach Cert CII in an average of ten months because of the fast-track support we receive with paid study time and amazing mentors.
Our welcome day took place inside the Lloyd’s building and our managers introduce us to industry leaders. This isn’t a token scheme – it is excellence in professional development, which is why we apprentices nominated CG for this award.
2. What makes your entry stand out, and why should you win the award?
CG has taken the talent challenge head-on by bringing new people straight into the industry and placing them at the centre of the brokerage rather than on the sidelines.
I’m a school-leaver apprentice myself and the scheme has supported me through my CII and now I’m fronting our bid for the Excellence in Professional Development Award, having already featured in industry press.
Apprentices here aren’t tucked away in classrooms. We’re involved in client service, broker meetings, operational delivery and even award submissions.
Our entry stands out because the development we talk about is happening every day in real roles.
3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
This apprenticeship scheme has launched my career and winning would recognise the access and trust CG gives young people.
I’ve been trusted to present to the Insurance Times Awards judges and was nominated to speak at the Insurance Times Broker CEO Forum alongside industry leaders.
I’m passionate about showing what’s possible – from school-leaver, to Cert CII by 18, when many friends are only just starting university and taking on student debt.
Insurance is dynamic, fun and open for new talent. Winning would honour a broker genuinely building a new generation for the industry and would mean a great deal to me personally.
