‘Life Science Combined is a key addition to our proposition suite. It will enable us to grow our presence in the sector and support our ambitious plans for 2026 and beyond,’ says managing director

Markel has launched a specialist life sciences insurance proposition aimed at supporting UK small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the sector.

The insurer said Life Science Combined was designed specifically for businesses operating across the life sciences value chain, from early-stage research and development through to product launch and distribution.

Developed in collaboration with broker partners and end customers, the proposition was built to address the complex and evolving risks faced by life sciences businesses.

Markel said that, according to official UK government statistics published in October 2025, the UK life sciences sector represents a significant opportunity, employing more than 359,600 people and generating £146.9bn in turnover.

Life Science Combined targets organisations operating in the life sciences, cosmetics and vitamins and food supplements sectors. It also supports service providers, including contract research and manufacturing organisations, regulatory consultancies, laboratories and software developers.

‘Key addition’

Markel said the proposition went beyond standard commercial combined covers by addressing sector-specific risks such as medical malpractice, product efficacy, cyber and clinical trials. Brokers placing risks will have access to dedicated Markel underwriters across the UK.

In addition to insurance cover, clients will have access to other services. These include a 24/7 cyber incident toolkit, in-house legal advice covering intellectual property and confidentiality term reviews, tax support for funding and relief opportunities and crisis public relations support.

Markel said the launch followed a review of its proposition suite and reflected broker feedback around the need for more tailored offerings in specialist sectors.

Lee Mooney, UK managing director at Markel, said: “Life Science Combined is a key addition to our proposition suite. It will enable us to grow our presence in the sector and support our ambitious plans for 2026 and beyond.

“By delivering tailored propositions that address complex risks and provide added-value services, we are helping brokers strengthen client relationships and unlock new opportunities.”
