’The structural changes we’ve announced today are about setting Markel International up for long-term success,’ says president
Markel International has appointed Tom Hiller as its chief underwriting officer and unveiled a new structure for its operations.
Hillier has been with Markel since December 2023, with him most recently serving as managing director for specialty after launching the insurer’s specialty practice within its international wholesale division.
In his new role, he will oversee underwriting strategy and governance across Markel International’s operations, working closely with business leaders to drive growth, enhance underwriting discipline and strengthen broker and MGA partnerships.
Andrew McMellin, president at Markel International, said: “Hiller’s appointment as chief underwriting officer is a key step in ensuring we have the right leadership in place to drive underwriting excellence and deepen our long-term partnerships with brokers and MGAs.”

Before the end of the year, it will move from two divisions – wholesale and national markets – to five distinct businesses.
This includes Asia-Pacific, Canada, Europe, the UK and London market, which comprises marine and energy, PFR abd cyber and specialty.
All five businesses will report directly to McMellin. As part of these changes, the roles of wholesale managing director and national markets managing director will no longer exist.
Henrik Bjørnstad, former national markets managing director, will leave the business at the end of the year.
McMellin said: “The structural changes we’ve announced today are about setting Markel International up for long-term success. They give each of the five new businesses the clarity and focus they need to grow and deliver for our clients and brokers.
“I’d also like to thank Bjørnstad for his leadership and the many valuable contributions he’s made over more than a decade with Markel International. I’m deeply grateful and wish him every success in his next chapter.”

His career began in 2019, when he joined a local north London newspaper after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a first-class honours degree in journalism.
He took up the position of deputy news editor at Insurance Times in March 2023, before being promoted to his current role in May 2024.View full Profile
